The economics of hydrogen in Japan: Comparing upstream and end-use business cases for hydrogen or ammonia

Aurora’s 2024 research agenda continues with a deep dive into the topic of hydrogen/ammonia economics in Japan with a focus on the following areas:

  • Exploring the current policy landscape and reviewing the subsidies available for different parts of the supply chain

  • Unpacking sectoral energy demand to determine where the long-term opportunities for hydrogen/ammonia are in Japan

  • Comparing the cost of different supply options: how electrolyzers versus steam reformation and other types of hydrogen production differ, along with where the latest project developments in these areas have been announced

  • Analyzing the complexities and costs of transporting hydrogen/ammonia—both domestically and from major exporters like Australia, the U.S., the Middle East, India, etc.

  • A number of case studies

  1. Upstream business models—evaluating the levelized cost of hydrogen/ammonia (LCOH) across different configurations and colors of hydrogen/ammonia
  2. Downstream business models—focusing on the power sector, a formulation of power turbine economics (new and retrofitted) and how subsidy bids will be determined (particularly into the Government’s Long-Term Decarbonization Auction—LTDA)

We kindly ask you to register by 4 July for this session. Please note, we limit participation to 2 attendees per organization on a first-come first-serve basis, but we would let you know if more seats become available closer to the date.
